Ritual Law and Moral Law

A Contrast Between the Abolished and the Eternal

One of the most misunderstood subjects in Christianity is the biblical meaning of “the law.” Many read passages such as Colossians 2, Ephesians 2, Galatians, Hebrews 7, Hebrews 10, or 2 Corinthians 3 and conclude that the entire law of God was abolished at the cross.

But the Bible presents a deeper and clearer picture.

There was a ritual or ceremonial law connected with sacrifices, offerings, priesthood, feasts, purification rites, and the earthly sanctuary service. This law pointed forward to Christ. It was a shadow of the great reality that would be fulfilled in the Lamb of God.

At the cross, those shadows met their fulfillment.

Christ became the true Sacrifice.
Christ became the true High Priest.
Christ became the reality to which the ceremonial system pointed.

However, the moral law, expressed in the Ten Commandments, was not abolished. It reveals sin, reflects the character of God, and remains the divine standard of righteousness. Paul declared, “The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good” (Rom. 7:12). Christ Himself said that He did not come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it (Matt. 5:17-19).

This study carefully explains the difference between the law that was fulfilled in Christ and the law that continues to reveal the will of God. It also answers common objections, including:

“Was the law nailed to the cross?”
“Does Colossians 2 abolish the Sabbath?”
“Does Hebrews 7 teach a change in the Ten Commandments?”
“Are Christians under grace and therefore free from obedience?”
“Is the distinction between moral law and ceremonial law biblical?”

The purpose of this study is not to teach salvation by works. Salvation is only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. But true grace does not lead the believer into disobedience. The grace that forgives also transforms. The new covenant does not erase God’s law; it writes it in the heart.
